lodging
Begin with four nights in the jungle...
At the beginning of your trip, you will stay in riverview cabins at Black Rock Lodge. Each cabin is nestled along the mountainside and allows for beautiful views of the river below and of the surrounding jungle. The cabins are private and inviting, with spacious interiors, unique detailing, two double beds and full bathroom. Relax in the hammock on your private porch, listen to the wildlife, and admire the sweeping view.
...then spend three nights on a 1-mile-long private island.
For the second stage of the eco-adventure retreat, you will stay in either the overwater cabanas or the raised casitas on the one-mile long Thatch Caye, a handbuilt private island resort. Designed and located to catch the sea breeze, each unit is complete with a private deck and hammocks, private bath, and choice of a king bed or two twins. Casitas are raised and include a window-seat and rooftop lounge, cabanas are built over the water--both offer amazing sights and sounds. Casitas are double occupancy, cabanas are double or single occupancy.
meals
All meals are included, beginning with dinner on arrival day. Belizean food is always deliciously homemade, and is simple and unfussy, focusing on produce that is in season. Meals will be served family-style, and vegetarian and vegan options can be catered to. All produce is locally grown, and while in the mountains, much is organically grown on-site at the lodge.
A typical breakfast might consist of eggs, beans, yogurt, homemade bread, papaya and freshly-squeezed orange juice. Lunch could be a cucumber salad and hummus on tortillas or quesadilla with fruit salad. A standard Belizean dinner is freshly-caught fish, sauteed vegetables and coconut rice, plus salad and dessert. Your meal package includes water served with meals and juice, coffee and tea at breakfast. Drinking water is provided to you free of charge in your rooms. Additional alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages may be purchased.
yoga
Morning and evening outdoor yoga classes with gorgeous views. The locations we have selected for our eco-adventure retreat fully integrate nature into yoga: open air, sweeping views, nature's soundtrack. We hope that these sublime locations will help you take your practice to a new level.
While at Black Rock Lodge, the 600 sq. ft. yoga deck is located directly above rapids in the Macal River, and you will love the sound of the rushing water during practice. The deck is shaded by a high thatched palapa, making an afternoon or evening session enjoyable even on a hot day. At Thatch Caye, the thatched yoga palapa is built out over the water, so that the gentle lapping Caribbean Sea and tropical breeze provide a calming backdrop. Situated to provide stunning sunrise and sunset views, you will love being fully immersed in beautiful surroundings.
adventures
Included in your eco-adventure retreat:
Xunantunich Mayan ruin tour
Caving tour to a Mayan ritual cave--choice of ATM cave or cave tubing
Choice of jungle horseback riding or canoeing
Two snorkeling tours to the barrier reef
Xunantunich--Guided tour of the magnificent Mayan ruin of Xunantunich. Travel across a hand-cranked ferry to visit this 6-plaza site with wonderfully preserved stellae. Climb atop El Castillo temple (the second largest structure in all of Belize) for a sweeping view of Belize and Guatemala.
Cave Tubing--Strap on a headlamp and float "lazy river" style down the Caves Branch River, passing in and out of the underground world once used for rituals by the ancient Maya.
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM)--To experience this amazing cave is to visit a place like no other. After a 45-minute hike in the Tapir Mountain Nature Preserve, you arrive at the entrance of ATM and swim or wade inside. ATM was a sacred Mayan ritual site, and still contains hundreds of astonishingly well-preserved Mayan artifacts and human skeletons, many of which have been 'cemented' to the cave interior with sparkling calcite.
Canoeing--Wind down 6 miles of the Macal River through moderate rapids while admiring the surrounding rainforest. Enjoy a few hours of being totally immersed in untouched natural beauty.
Horseback riding--Spend an afternoon quietly exploring the jungle on horseback, enjoying the scenery and wildlife along remote trails.
Snorkeling the Western Hemisphere's largest barrier reef--Belize's barrier reef is like a living art gallery. Living among the many beautiful corals are a myriad of tropical fish--Blue Tang, Angelfish, Butterfly Fish, Parrot Fish...there are simply too many to name. Snorkelers often see elusive beauties such as spotted eagle rays, sea turtles and the magnificent Queen Triggerfish.
